Michael Polanyi (1891–1976)
Hungarian-British polymath: physician, physical chemist (kinetics, adsorption, crystallography — FRS 1944), economist, and philosopher of science. Professor of physical chemistry at Manchester, then Chair of Social Sciences. Brother of economist Karl Polanyi; father of Nobel laureate John Polanyi. Author of Personal Knowledge (1958) and The Tacit Dimension (1966). 1
The Boundary-Condition Argument
His 1968 Science paper “Life’s Irreducible Structure” (160: 1308–1312, PMID 5651890) argues that:
- A machine’s operation is controlled by higher-level boundary conditions imposed on the laws of physics and chemistry — the laws govern the materials, but the machine’s organization harnesses them
- Living mechanisms are dual-controlled systems: physico-chemical laws determine the processes, while the organism’s organizational information (e.g., the sequence of bases in DNA) is a boundary condition above those laws, with a hierarchy of further boundary levels above it
- Therefore a complete account of life in terms of lower-level physical laws alone misses that organization imposes higher-level constraints not derivable from the laws themselves 1
The article’s verdict: whether one accepts Polanyi’s stronger metaphysical conclusions or not, the conceptual strategy — organization as physically-real higher-level boundary conditions on lower-level laws — is a useful precedent for organizational emergence. Modern biology indeed explains much of life molecularly, so the argument must not be overstated (“life cannot be reduced to chemistry” is too strong); the defensible claim is that organismal properties depend on organization, feedback, regulation, and temporal dynamics, not merely the additive sum of molecular properties. 1
