Theophrastus (c. 371–287 BCE)

Greek philosopher and naturalist from Eresos on Lesbos, Aristotle’s colleague, collaborator, and successor as head of the Lyceum. Originally named Tyrtamus, Aristotle renamed him Theophrastus (“godlike speech”) for his eloquence. He is most famous as the founder of botany: his Enquiry into Plants (Historia Plantarum) and On the Causes of Plants were the first systematic treatises on plant life and remained authoritative for over 1,500 years. Together, Aristotle and Theophrastus founded biology as a science — Aristotle on animals, Theophrastus on plants. 1 2

Biology: Botany, Zoology, and Physiology

Botany (Theophrastus’s Signature Contribution)

Theophrastus’s botanical works are the earliest surviving systematic treatments of plants in the Western tradition and constitute his most important scientific legacy: 1

  • Enquiry into Plants (Historia Plantarum): Classifies plants by differences in parts (roots, stems, leaves), habitats, modes of reproduction, and uses. Describes over 500 species. Distinguishes between flowering and non-flowering plants, trees and herbs, and between wild and cultivated varieties.
  • On the Causes of Plants (De Causis Plantarum): Covers plant physiology, growth, cultivation, and responses to environment — anticipating ecology and agricultural science.

He introduced fundamental botanical concepts still used today: the distinction between monocotyledons and dicotyledons, between evergreen and deciduous, and between annual, biennial, and perennial life cycles.

Zoology: Animal Behaviour and Intelligence

Theophrastus did not pursue Aristotle’s interest in anatomy and dissection but instead focused on animal behaviour, psychology, and the continuity between humans and other animals. He showed interest in intelligent animal behaviour and seems to have somewhat effaced the line between humans and other animals, stressing a “natural relationship” (oikeiotēs) between humans and animals. This anticipates modern debates about animal cognition and welfare. 1

He was notably more sceptical than Aristotle about spontaneous generation — he allowed that the same plants and animals could come either from seed or spontaneously in some cases, but questioned Aristotle’s firm distinction between the two.

Human Physiology

Theophrastus wrote on sweating, fatigue, and dizziness (fragments survive). He followed Aristotle’s four basic qualities (hot, cold, dry, wet) and the central role of the heart, but diverged in claiming that pneuma (breath/spirit) extends throughout the body rather than being concentrated in the heart area — a significant physiological disagreement with Aristotle. 1

Relationship to Aristotle

Theophrastus was not simply a disciple but an independent thinker who often challenged, supplemented, or diverged from Aristotle: 1

He also preserved Aristotle’s works: when he inherited the Lyceum’s library, his will left all the books — including Aristotle’s manuscripts — to his disciple Neleus, which was crucial for their eventual survival and transmission to the modern world.

Philosophy of Science: The Principle of Multiple Explanations

Theophrastus is known for his principle of multiple explanations — the view that natural phenomena can be accounted for by several different causal stories, none of which may be uniquely correct. This contrasts with Aristotle’s drive toward a single, unified causal explanation. Epicurus later adopted this principle, though modified for his atomist framework (any possible explanation is true somewhere in the infinite universe). 1

Influence and Legacy

  • Founder of botany — his plant classifications and physiological concepts were authoritative until the Renaissance (and beyond, influencing Linnaeus and early modern naturalists)
  • Preserver of Aristotle’s works — without his inheritance and transmission, much of the Aristotelian corpus might have been lost
  • Epicurus and Hellenistic philosophy — his principle of multiple explanations and his naturalistic exclusion of divine causes influenced Epicurean physics
  • Animal cognition — his emphasis on the continuity between humans and other animals prefigures modern comparative psychology and ethology
  • Sceptical empiricism — more cautious than Aristotle about final causes and essentialist metaphysics, he represents an alternative tradition within Peripatetic philosophy
