Decoherence and Einselection

Zurek developed the theory of environment-induced decoherence: under scrutiny of the environment, only certain “pointer states” remain unchanged, while other states decohere into mixtures of stable pointer states — a process he called einselection (environment-induced superselection). This explains the emergence of the classical world from the quantum substrate. Key works: “Decoherence and the transition from quantum to classical” (Physics Today, 1991) and “Decoherence, einselection, and the quantum origins of the classical” (Reviews of Modern Physics, 2003).

Quantum Darwinism

In 2009 (Nature Physics), Zurek introduced Quantum Darwinism: the environment acts as a witness that proliferates information about pointer states, explaining how objective classical reality emerges from the quantum universe. Emphasized that his work does not depend on a particular interpretation of quantum mechanics — it is interpretation-free.

Envariance and the Born Rule

In 2005 (Physical Review A), Zurek derived the Born rule from “envariance” symmetry: for entangled systems, a unitary evolution of one system can be undone by a corresponding unitary of the system with which it is entangled; since local manipulations cannot alter probabilities, the probabilities of swapped states must be equal. This provides a symmetry-based derivation of the probability rule used within the many-worlds-interpretation framework.

Relation to the Many-Worlds Interpretation

Decoherence (pioneered by Zeh, developed by Zurek) is the mechanism by which modern MWI explains the subjective appearance of wave function collapse and the emergence of quasi-classical worlds. Zurek’s envariance supplies one of the strongest derivations of the Born rule used in MWI probability theory.
