Universal Grammar

Overview

Universal Grammar (UG) is the theory that humans are born with an innate biological component of the language faculty — that there are innate constraints on what the grammar of any possible human language can be. The theory is most closely associated with noam-chomsky, though its roots predate him. Within generative linguistics, UG is the framework within which all languages are studied.

The basic idea: when children receive linguistic input, they don’t learn grammar purely by induction from examples (the poverty of the stimulus argument shows there is insufficient data). Instead, they are born with prior knowledge of the general form that grammar can take, and language acquisition is the process of setting language-specific parameters within those constraints.

The Poverty of the Stimulus Argument

The core empirical motivation for UG is the observation that children acquire grammatical rules that are underdetermined by the input they receive.

Classic example: English yes-no question formation. Children could hypothetically learn the rule “switch the order of the first two words.” Instead, universally, they jump immediately to rules that respect hierarchical constituent structure (e.g., the first auxiliary of the main clause is fronted, not just the first word). This suggests an innate bias toward hierarchical structure — children know grammatical rules must involve tree structure, not linear order, before they have enough evidence to distinguish these possibilities.

Historical Background

Precursors:

  • 17th century: Port-Royal Grammar (Lancelot & Arnauld) — a general grammar for languages, concluding grammar must be universal
  • 18th century: Scottish school of universal grammarians (Beattie, Blair, Burnett, Harris, Adam Smith)
  • 19th–20th century: Wundt, Jespersen — universal syntactic categories
  • Behaviourists (Skinner): language acquired by trial, error, and reward — rejected by Chomsky in his devastating 1959 review of Skinner’s Verbal Behavior

Chomsky’s revolution:

  • Syntactic Structures (1957): transformational grammar
  • Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965): competence vs. performance; deep vs. surface structure
  • Minimalist Program (1990s–): UG reduces to a single core operation, Merge — the recursive combination of syntactic objects — from which all hierarchical structure follows

Recursion as the Core of UG

A 2002 paper by Hauser, Chomsky, and Fitch argued that UG in the narrow sense (FLN — Faculty of Language, Narrow) consists solely of the capacity for hierarchical phrase structure — i.e., recursion. Merge creates phrases from words, and phrases from phrases, without limit. This generates the infinite expressive capacity of human language from a finite vocabulary.

Three hypotheses for the evolution of language (Hauser et al. 2002):

  1. FLb (broad) is strictly homologous to animal communication — individual traits evolved for non-language functions and were co-opted
  2. FLb is a derived, uniquely human adaptation for language
  3. Only FLn (recursion/Merge) is unique to humans; the broader faculty (memory, social cognition) is shared with other animals

The Pirahã Challenge

The Pirahã language (Everett 2005, 2008) presents the most prominent empirical challenge to UG’s recursion claim. If Pirahã genuinely lacks recursion in its grammar, and if recursion is UG’s defining feature, Pirahã would falsify UG.

Chomsky’s replies:

  1. Recursion is an innate capacity, not a requirement. A language can have the capacity without exercising it.
  2. Everett’s data are disputed — other linguists (and Everett’s own earlier work) found evidence of embedding in Pirahã.
  3. Even if true, absence of recursive grammar doesn’t preclude recursive thought — Everett himself describes recursive behaviours (deer foraging patterns) and recursive ideas in Pirahã discourse.

UG and Linguistic Relativity

UG and linguistic-relativity represent opposite poles:

  • UG emphasises universal innate constraints on grammar, minimising the cognitive role of cross-linguistic differences
  • Linguistic relativity emphasises how cross-linguistic differences shape cognition

The two are not logically contradictory: one can hold that UG constrains the form of possible grammars while accepting that within that space, linguistic variation influences cognition.

Creole Languages

The emergence of creole languages is sometimes cited as supporting UG (Bickerton’s language bioprogram theory): when children exposed only to inconsistent pidgin input create a fully-structured creole language, they are drawing on innate grammatical knowledge.
