Linguistic Relativity

Overview

Linguistic relativity (also called the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, Whorfianism, or the Whorf–Sapir hypothesis) is the hypothesis that the structure of a language influences or constrains its speakers’ worldview, perception, and cognition. It exists on a spectrum:

  • Strong version — Linguistic Determinism: language determines thought; linguistic categories limit cognitive categories. Now largely rejected in its extreme form.
  • Weak version: language influences perception and cognition without strictly constraining it. Supported by modern experimental evidence.

The current consensus is that language influences certain cognitive processes in non-trivial ways, particularly in domains like colour perception, spatial reasoning, time, and number, but other processes develop independently of language.

Historical Development

Ancient Roots

The idea that language and thought are intertwined has ancient roots. Plato explored it in Cratylus. Augustine argued language was merely labels for pre-existing concepts. Kant saw language as one of several methods for experiencing the world.

German Romantic Philosophers

The modern form of the idea emerged with Johann Georg Hamann (“a people’s language affects their worldview”), Johann Gottfried Herder (emotional component), and Wilhelm von Humboldt (1820): “The diversity of languages is not a diversity of signs and sounds but a diversity of views of the world.” Humboldt argued language creates the individual’s worldview through its lexical and grammatical categories.

Boas, Sapir, and Whorf

Franz Boas challenged the view that some languages were inferior or that “primitive” languages limited cognition. Edward Sapir argued language influences habitual thought. His student Benjamin Lee Whorf (1897–1941), through observations of Hopi and other indigenous languages, became the primary proponent — arguing that the structure of one’s language influences how its speakers conceptualise the world.

The label “Sapir–Whorf hypothesis” was coined by Harry Hoijer (another of Sapir’s students), even though Sapir and Whorf never formally stated it as a hypothesis or used a weak/strong dichotomy.

Universalist Challenge (1960s)

During the 1960s, as Chomskyan Universal Grammar emphasised the universal nature of human language and cognition, linguistic relativity fell out of favour. The universalist position held that the deep structure of all languages is the same, and cognitive capacities are language-independent.

Revival (1980s–Present)

From the late 1980s, researchers including Stephen Levinson, John Lucy, and Lera Boroditsky revived linguistic relativity with tighter experimental methods. Results show:

  • Colour perception: speakers of languages with different colour categories perceive colours differently (especially across the basic/non-basic boundary)
  • Spatial reasoning: speakers of absolute-frame languages (e.g., Guugu Yimithirr) maintain cardinal-direction orientation more reliably
  • Time: speakers of languages that spatialise time differently reason about temporal sequences differently
  • Number: speakers of languages without number words (e.g., Pirahã, Munduruku) have difficulty with exact numerical matching

Pirahã as a Test Case

The Pirahã language is often cited as extreme evidence for or against linguistic relativity. Pirahã speakers:

  • Lack number words and show corresponding difficulties with exact quantity tasks
  • Have no creation myths, no reference to the unobserved past
  • Use obligatory grammatical evidentiality — speakers must encode their source of information

Whether this reflects language causing cognitive differences or shared cultural/cognitive constraints causing both the language and the cognition is debated (Everett’s Immediacy of Experience Principle).

Relation to Universal Grammar

Linguistic relativity and universal-grammar represent opposing emphases: UG stresses what is universal and innate across all languages; linguistic relativity stresses how languages differ and how differences matter. The two are not strictly contradictory — one can hold that there are innate universal constraints (UG) while also believing that within that space, linguistic variation influences cognition (weak relativity).

Relation to Other Concepts

  • bouba-kiki-effect — non-arbitrary crossmodal sound-shape mappings found across all languages suggest some deep universals resistant to linguistic relativism
  • molyneuxs-problem — whether spatial knowledge is transferred cross-modally relates to whether such knowledge is linguistically mediated
