Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) was a German polymath and one of the great rationalist philosophers of the early modern period. His contributions span metaphysics, epistemology, logic, philosophy of religion, mathematics (independently inventing calculus), physics, geology, jurisprudence, and history. In the context of modal logic and this wiki, his most important contributions are the notion of possible worlds (which underpins modern kripke-semantics) and his modal version of the ontological argument (which exploits S5’s reduction principle; see s5-modal-logic). 1

Foundational Principles

Leibniz’s philosophy is built on several fundamental principles: 1

  • Principle of Contradiction (PC): A proposition cannot be both true and false simultaneously.
  • Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR): Nothing happens without a reason why it should be so rather than otherwise. This is the foundation of his cosmological argument.
  • Predicate-in-Notion Principle (PIN): In a true proposition, the concept of the predicate is “contained in” the concept of the subject. This grounds his logical conception of substance.
  • Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles (PII): No two distinct substances can share exactly the same properties.
  • Principle of the Best: God always acts to create the best of all possible worlds (the basis of his theodicy/optimism).

Leibniz anticipated the central idea of possible worlds semantics by over two centuries. He characterized necessary truths as those true in all possible worlds, contingent truths as those true in the actual world but not all possible worlds, and possible truths as those true in at least one possible world. This framework provides the intuitive basis for the modal operators □ (“necessarily”) and ◇ (“possibly”). 2 1

The Ontological Argument and S5

Leibniz gave a modal formulation of the ontological argument for God’s existence, captured in his dictum: “If a necessary being is possible, it follows that it exists actually.” This reasoning depends on the S5 reduction principle (◇□A → □A): if a necessary being is possible in at least one possible world, it is necessary in all possible worlds (since its nature is to exist necessarily), and therefore exists simpliciter. Metaphysics: Monads and Pre-established Harmony

Leibniz’s mature metaphysics posits that reality consists of an infinite number of simple, mind-like substances called monads (from Greek monas, “unit”). Each monad is:

  • Simple (without parts)
  • Unique (no two monads are identical — the PII)
  • Perceiving (each monad represents the entire universe from its own perspective)
  • Windowless (no causal interaction between monads — their harmony is pre-established by God)

Physical phenomena emerge from the perceptions of monads, making Leibniz an idealist. This view contrasts with Descartes’ dualism and Spinoza’s pantheism. 1

Epistemology

  • Truths of Reason vs. Truths of Fact: Truths of reason are necessary and known a priori (their denial is a contradiction); truths of fact are contingent and known a posteriori. This distinction anticipates the analytic/synthetic distinction.
  • Innate Ideas: Leibniz argued for innate intellectual ideas, rejecting the Lockean tabula rasa. He compared the mind to a block of marble whose veins determine what sculpture it can become.
  • Petites Perceptions: Subliminal perceptions that are too faint for conscious awareness but nonetheless influence behaviour — a precursor to unconscious mental processes in psychology. 1

Connection to Molyneux’s Problem

Leibniz took the affirmative position on molyneuxs-problem: he held that the newly-sighted person could visually identify shapes previously known only by touch, because spatial relations are necessary and perceived directly by reason (a rationalist position). 4
