- Connexus® BCI — first product; wireless, fully implantable, penetrating microelectrode array. Designed to restore communication for people with severe motor impairment (ALS, brainstem stroke, spinal cord injury). Records neural activity at the level of individual neurons; uses AI to translate brain signals into outputs (synthesized speech, text, computer control).1
- First-in-human: procedure completed June 2025 (announced Jun 2, 2025) at University of Michigan Health, during epilepsy resection surgery (temporal lobectomy). - What was demonstrated: safe implantation, recording of electrical brain signals, and removal intact in under 20 minutes using standard neurosurgical techniques; followed ~3 years of preclinical studies with the same device; described as “the first of many surgeries planned over the next several months.”1
- Channel count discrepancy (flagged): the U-M BME article describes the device as about the size of a penny with 421 microelectrodes (“over four times the number of sensors compared to similar technology”), while existing wiki figures for the Connexus platform list 1,600 channels (see brain-interface). The press release itself gives no channel count. Treat 421 as the reported implant configuration of the FIH device per U-M; verify against full platform specs.
- Clinical path: long-term use/safety trial planned for later 2025 pending regulatory approval → became the Connect-One study (FDA IDE approved Nov 2025, see brain-interface); Aug 2026 FDA approval to expand BCI access to personal computing devices in Connect-One (Paradromics news, Aug 26 2026).
