Overview

The Bouba/Kiki effect is a psychological phenomenon demonstrating that humans non-arbitrarily map speech sounds to visual shapes. It reveals how the brain intrinsically links soft, rounded sounds to curved visual forms and hard, plosive sounds to jagged, angular shapes.

Universality and Developmental Evidence

The effect has been replicated across diverse languages and writing systems globally, suggesting a universal, likely hardwired cross-modal mapping:
