Pieter Roelfsema
Professor of Neurobiology; director of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN); leader of the Vision & Cognition group; co-founder of phosphoenix. The scientific backbone of the modern cortical visual prosthesis field.

- NIN (KNAW, Amsterdam): director; Vision & Cognition group — cortical mechanisms of visual perception, memory, plasticity, attention; visual prosthesis development (“aiming to restore a rudimentary form of sight”, per CCN 2025 keynote bio).
- Coordinator of the Dutch neurotechnology initiative NeuroTech-NL.

The breakthrough
With Xing Chen (lead author), Eduardo Fernández and Fei Wang: “Shape perception via a high-channel-count neuroprosthesis in monkey visual cortex” (Science, Dec 2020) — a 1024-channel prosthesis in monkey V1+V4; phosphene percepts matched receptive fields; simultaneous multi-electrode stimulation generated percepts recognized as shapes, motion, letters. This demonstrated the theoretical feasibility of functional cortex-driven form vision and changed the field’s expectations for electrode count (see Perspective by Beauchamp & Yoshor).1
Why it matters
Roelfsema’s lab provides the science behind the EU cortical challenge: while retinal devices (PRIMA) achieved commercial form vision, cortex prostheses can work for any blindness cause. His group’s 1024-channel results, plus the clinical evolution to LGN targeting via Phosphoenix, define the current state of “can you actually see via the brain” — the frontier that Neuralink Blindsight, ReVision and Orion (see cortical-visual-prosthesis-companies) are racing to translate.
