Project Aria (Meta)
Overview
Project Aria is Meta’s research program for egocentric machine perception: Aria glasses are used by researchers internally at Meta and by over 200 academic and corporate partners to accelerate research across contextual AI, machine perception and robotics. The program pairs research hardware with open-source datasets, models and tooling (the Aria Research Kit: glasses + tools + services via a rolling application). 1
Aria Gen 1 (2020)
Announced September 2020 as a research project on the future of wearable AR. Baseline sensor/processing configuration relative to Gen 2: 2 computer-vision cameras, 70 dB dynamic range, 35° stereo overlap, software-based time synchronization between devices. 2
Aria Gen 2 (2025)
Aria Gen 2 is the next-generation research device, announced and detailed in a Meta AI blog (2025-06-04) and pitched as “the most advanced research glasses ever made.” 2 1

Why It Matters Here
Aria Gen 2 is a concrete instance of the smart-glasses trajectory: 6DOF spatial tracking (VIO), 3D registration and dense reconstruction, eye/hand tracking, and on-device perception — i.e., the “tracking, alignment, latency” problems identified as AR’s core difficulty since the 1990s, now solved in a 74–76 g, on-device form factor.
