Belgian healthtech company (Ghent) building the first medical-grade smart contact lens (“ALMA” platform); spin-off from imec and Ghent University (2021).

Overview

Azalea Vision’s lens integrates adaptive optics, custom microelectronics, liquid-crystal technology and NFC connectivity — an “adaptive, intelligent, connected” medical wearable rather than an implant. The platform adapts to light, focus and movement in real time, engineered for presbyopia, keratoconus, irregular corneas / higher-order aberrations and photophobia, and it is designed to scale into diagnostics, biosensing and ocular drug delivery.1

Not a visual prosthesis: Azalea corrects and adapts optics; it does not stimulate the retina or cortex. It sits in the adjacent “smart contact lens / medical wearable” category often reviewed alongside visual-prosthesis technologies (cf. axorus, a photoacoustic retinal prosthesis company also pursuing a contact-lens form factor).
